Dog's Days

She started beating me even then. Up until just a year ago she was hitting me with whatever was in reach. A shoe. A hair brush. Once even a vodka bottle. I had to have my hand x-rayed. In the emergency room she said that I fell down. When the doctor asked me what happened, I said, "I fell down." She was nice to me for a few weeks after that. Then it started all over again.
